Relay For Life at Aldersgate

Residents at Meridian's Aldersgate Retirement Community Friday more than tripled their fundraising goal to fight cancer. The staff and residents had their own "Relay for Life", walking around the complex. Activity Director Melanie Griffin says it started out as just a very small scale event with a goal of $300.00, but the residents ended up raising more than $1,000.00 for the American Cancer Society. Griffin says it's important for the residents to engage in meaningful projects: "Here at Aldersgate, we like to do things that are fun, and cute little activities and socials, for the residents to get out, but we also like to do things that are meaningful activities, and by that, I mean, we have a lot of volunteer hours that come in to Aldersgate, but we are also concerned about the volunteer hours that go out of Aldersgate." Griffin says relay for life is a natural for the residents and staff, because everyone there has been touched at some point in their lives, by someone battling cancer.
