Members of the Mississippi Economic Council trained Meridian business leaders about a statewide school program in Lauderdale County.
Community leaders learned about the Mississippi Scholars Program and how to motivate local students to enroll.
The initiative stresses rigorous academics, community service, and near-perfect attendance for high school students. The volunteers will take the message to local eighth grade classrooms:
"We are talking with students about rigor and relevance, so it will help students understand why they should take a rigorous course of study in high school," said Vickie Powell of the Mississippi Economic Council.
Mississippi Scholars graduates are eligible for numerous scholarships, and are presented with a special medallion at their high school graduation. The students are also honored by their communities and schools.
