Meridian, Miss. March is Women's History Month across the United States, and organizers are preparing for it here in Lauderdale County.
The first official celebration in Mississippi came in 2011. This year's theme is "Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, And Commitment." Organizers locally have chosen Polly Heidelberg as the woman who best describes these characteristics. Heidelberg fought for civil rights and she appeared in national publications, including the New York Times.
"She is our Fannie Lou Hamer. She has earned that distinction and when we start reading about her hopefully maybe one of these Sundays, the third Sunday, the churches, maybe that Friday the schools, everyone will read the information," said Ruth Jones, the Mississippi coordinator of Women's History Month.
