Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry was able to acquire fifteen used FEMA cottages that will be used as dorms at the Lauderdale County Training Facility.
The trailers are worth about $34,000 each, but the city received them for free.
"Mayor Barry asked me early on when she had the opportunity to get some Katrina cottages from the state, if we could use some to expand our dormitory space," said Homeland Security director Tim Miller. "The answer was 'yes', because we have had to turn away classes because we haven't had room for the students. So she worked with MEMA to make this happen for us."
The training facility will soon be able to double its class sizes, thereby doubling the revenue the facility brings in. The cottages are expected to be up and running in twelve to twenty-four months.
