The award goes to schools whose students perform at high levels or who have made dramatic improvements in their achievement, particularly for low-income children.

The schools are: Kosciusko Middle School; Madison Station Elementary School in Madison; Nichols Elementary School in Biloxi; and Southeast Lauderdale High School.

Nichols was closed after last school year due to budget constraints and declining enrollment.

About 300 schools were recognized nationally this year. The schools will be honored Nov. 15-16 in Washington, D.C.

The award has been given out annually by the Education Department since 1982.

I teach at a different LCSD school, but I am so proud of Southeast Lauderdale High School. Their National Blue Ribbon status says everything about how Southeast District educates its students! Keep up the GREAT work!!!

I am so proud for Southeast. It seems like they always get a bad rap but it seems like they are one of the better ones in the County.

All the school rankings are to be released Friday by the state. This story came in a separate news release from the U.S. Department of Education.

What happened to the rest of the local schools----both city and county? Where did they rank, or did they have no ranking? I find that hard to believe.
