Queen City Fair Parking Issue Resolved

The Queen City Fair will have plenty of parking for everyone. In recent weeks, the Mississippi Department of Transportation informed local leaders that fair goers can no longer park along Highway 19, but organizers say the solution is even better for those attending.

Traffic along Highway 19 can get heavy and at times and dangerous for pedestrians. For this reason organizers say they feel moving overflow parking off of the highway right-of-way is a good idea.

"This parking situation has become a bigger deal in the last few years, just by virtue of the fact that we have had more people here," said Len McRae of Eventz, which brings the fair to Lauderdale County.

And now, the issue has been resolved. City and county leaders have been meeting for weeks to reach a solution.

"We are planning on allowing them to park down on the NEW Corporation road, newly constructed road there, and just to alleviate problems, we are going to have a shuttle bus," said city engineer Champ Adcock.

"As far as I'm concerned, we are just parking in a different place, when it comes to the overflow parking, when you are having overflow parking issues, it's a good thing that means you are having enough people that you need more space," McRae said.

Only on busy nights like Friday and Saturday is this a big issue. For most of the week there will be plenty of parking on site at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center.

"We have expanded some of the parking here around the Ag Center and that will help out a lot of it," McRae said. "And there are just going to be times Friday and Saturday night during the peak hours that it will be an issue."

Local leaders say they expect don't foresee any major problems with the change, as the new parking area will be clearly marked and plenty of representatives will be available to direct traffic.

The fair is Sept. 27-Oct. 3.
