The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department says it doesn't have much information to release, and is not currently releasing the name of the child. Friday, the department was awaiting the results of a preliminary autopsy.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said the sheriff's department was contacted by a local hospital late last week. He said the child was taken to a Meridian hospital Sept. 14, and the hospital reported it to authorities two days later.
They had reason to believe the injuries that led to the death were not accidental.
"They had transferred a 2-year-old over to UMC, University Medical Center in Jackson. Based upon the injuries and the condition of the child, they believed that there could be some type of foul play that could have occurred with the injuries this particular child had."
According to Calhoun, officials with the Mississippi Department of Human Services were also contacted.
