A candidate for the House District 82 seat has picked up the endorsement of a former opponent.
At a news conference Wednesday, Robert Barfield, Sr., cast his support to Wilbert Jones.
Jones led voting in the June 9 special election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of state Rep. Charles Young.
"He's been in the area a long time," said Barfield of Jones. "He's employed in the medical field. And as we all know, we have some medical issues going on. And I think he would have a heads up on that situation as far as dealing with the doctors and all that on how our votes and stuff should be cast and how to go about improving on the medical field in this area."
"I really respect him and appreciate his endorsing me, and hope that his people that cast votes for Mr. Barfield will vote for me in the runoff election," Jones said.
Jones is in a June 30 runoff with Bill Marcy. Both men placed first and second in a 5-candidate field in the special election, but no one received a majority. The term will run through the year 2011.
