State Seeks to Combine Funeral Policy Claims

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann and Attorney General Jim Hood have asked that claims against four Mississippi prepaid funeral policy providers be consolidated.

The motion will be heard July 22 in Prentiss County Chancery Court. Hosemann and Hood say consolidation would speed up the legal process.

The four providers named in the motion are Prentiss Memorial Gardens, Baldwyn; Liberty Memorial Gardens, Booneville; Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Calhoun City; and Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Laurel.

An investigation began in late 2007 after complaints were filed with the secretary of state's office and the attorney general's office.

Hosemann said the state's investigation found that the funeral policy providers did not properly fund pre-need trust accounts.
