Mississippi's unemployment rate climbed to 9.6 percent in May, a significant increase from the same period a year ago.
The Mississippi Department of Employment Security jobless figures showed 126,400 people were unemployed in May, up from 112,100 in April and 91,200 in May 2008.
Mississippi's unemployment rate was 6.9 percent last May. The national unemployment rate was 9.1 percent last month.
Rankin County had the lowest rate in the state at 6 percent. Holmes County at 18.3 percent had the highest rate followed by Jefferson, Noxubee, and Winston counties.
