The Mississippi Department of Health wants the public to know that a new immunization requirement will only apply to students enrolling in state schools for the first time.
The health agency said new students enrolling in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade must have a second dose of the chickenpox vaccine before beginning classes this fall.
In a news release Thursday, the agency said day care facilities, school administrators, physicians and other providers were notified of the requirement in March.
The requirement for a second dose of varicella vaccine was made in 2007 but has been waived for the past two school years due to a national shortage of vaccine.
