Firefighters Called to 3rd Avenue South

A fire Thursday did major damage to the home of a Meridian family. It happened about 11:30 a.m. at a house on 3rd Avenue South.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were showing. It took them several minutes to extinguish the fire.

One man was at home at the time of the fire, but he managed to escape unharmed.

"Something just told me to get up and run out the house," said occupant Gregory Dean. "And when I ran out from the crib, I saw my mama's window open and saw smoking coming up. So I ran across the street to call the fire truck, but it wouldn't go through. So I ran to my auntie's house to tell them to call the fire truck."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

I do feel bad for anyone who looses a home. This is by far one of the greatest tragedies a family can face, but I beg to differ w/ those who say record your own voice. I have heard my own voicemail recording several times & have never accidentally pronounced street w/ a "k" nor have I used 3 prepositions in a row. "I ran 'up out of' the crib." And I understand using slang when hanging out w/ friends but speaking like this in an interview and things of this nature are what give our state the reputation it has for being #50 of 50 states on the education scale.
