It has taken several years, but work has finally begun on a new interstate interchange for Meridian's I-20/59 Industrial Park.
The interchange will be located between the Highway 39 and Highway 45 exits in Meridian, giving businesses much better access to the park. The project has been in the works for several years.
Now the work has started, and Meridian's new Industrial Park off of Interstate 20/59 is on its way to becoming a reality.
The work is on the interchange so that the Industrial Park is accessible from Interstate 20/59.
"The north leg will come into 11/80. The south leg will come into 19 South across the road from Bonita Lakes," said Hank Florey, supervisors board president. "So it'll be the two legs plus the interchange itself."
Florey said the interchange is being used to entice potential businesses to locate in Meridian.
"It's quite an asset to our community," said Florey. "It will take a lot of the traffic off of the Bonita interchange, which is crowded right now, and also it will enhance our new industrial park."
Handy Hardware is the first business that will locate in the new industrial park.
"Handy Hardware is pleased with it, of course. That's one reason they chose to come. This will give them access to the two interstates," Florey said.
The construction on the interchange will take place over approximately two years.
