Police ID Suspect in Hit and Run

Meridian police say they've identified the man they believe hit a child with his car July 17 and left the scene without rendering aid or waiting for police and medical personnel.

He's identified by police as Darryl Hampton, Jr., 35, also known as "Dickey Doo". He's 6'2", medium build, medium blown complexion and medium brown eyes. Hampton commonly wears his hair very closely cut or bald, and has a full mustache and beard.

Police also say the car involved in the hit and run has been found, although its appearance had been extremely altered. The vehicle had been spray painted white.

Police say if charges are pursued , Hampton could face misdemeanor traffic charges and felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries or death. Officials say an additional felony charge of interfering with the prosecution of a felony, based on altering the vehicle involved ,may also be pursued.

If you have any information on Hampton's whereabouts, call Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.

The child who was hit as he rode his bicycle was listed in critical but stable condition Thursday.

Any One Running A Child Down In The Streets And Leaving The Scene Of An Accident Should Get Life In Prison.

i think it is really sad that a human being would actually do this. the victim is just a baby. i hope the police will find him and he will be charged with everything they can charge him with. and to the family of te victim the baby is in my prayers. but i think the parents should have known if the baby made it to his friends house. i live in the meridian area and these people of meridian acts like they are in a derby on these side roads. it is crazy. i hope the police can slow them down before something else happens

If he is the person maybe someone should run over him and leave him in the middle of street.Maybe his family would feel the same as the little childs family. I agree this is a very coward thing to do for someone who thinks he is so hard. Then he was stupid enough to try to spray paint his car and think no one would notice. Apperently crime does not pay for this coward and he should find another line of work.

"Officials say an additional felony charge of interfering with the prosecution of a felony, based on altering the vehicle involved ,may also be pursued" MAY BE PURSUED? Charge him with everything possible, this was a dispicable act! Just leaving a child lying in the street to die because you didn't want to get in trouble? Put him in jail, and don't let him out!

I JUST DON'T GET A TEN YEARS OLD BABY GOING TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH A FRIEND STILL THAT PARENT SUPPOSE TO MAKE SURE THAT BABY GOT THERE SAFE AND THAT WAS NOTHING BUT A BABY AND SHE SAID SHE WENT RIGHT BY THERE WHEN IT HAPPEN. I'M SORRY BUT I WOULD CALL THAT PARENT AND MAKE SURE HE GOT THERE SAFE I JUST DON'T SEE IT AND HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR THE PARENTS TO FIND OUT ABOUT IT. I HOPE THE LAW GET THE MAN FOR DOING THIS TO THAT BABY.

This coward should turn himself in and face the music. Regardless, when he's finally brought to justice I hope they lock him in a cell and throw away the key. What kind of low-down coward would do such a thing. So how about it, DickeyDoo, how do you look at yourself in the mirror and like what you see?

HOW COULD HE THINK THAT HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN AWAY WITH THIS. THE BEST THING TO DO TO FIND HIM IS QUESTION HIS PARENTS, I AM QUITE SURE THEY KNOW HIS WHEREABOUTS. HE CAN RUN FOR SO LONG, BUT HE CAN'T HIDE. HE SHOULD JUST GIVE UP. I AM PRETTY SURE HE HAVE KIDS. AND IF HE DO HE NEED TO THINK ABOUT WHAT IF IT HAD BEEN HIS CHILD. I PRAY THAT GOD WILL NOT LET HIM REST, EVEN WHEN HE'S CAUGHT. HE SHOULD NOT EVEN BE OFFER A BOND, BECAUSE HE ALREADY CONSIDER A FLIGHT RISK. LETS FIND THIS MAN...

I know him and his wife and if I see him I will be turning him in. I was so angry when I heard the hitting of the child on the news I thought who would be low-down and leave a child in the middle of the road. I'm sure he was drinking and probaly on probation as usual. As far as the child his mother said they had to do emergency surgury on him in Meridian before they sent him to Jackson they have him heavily medicated until some of the swelling release off of his brain. She also said the doctor said he will probaly have brain damage from all this. He was on his way to a friends house that night to spend the night see how life can change in a instant.
