The Clarke County Sheriff's Department is on the look-out for an escapee from the Clarke County Jail.

The escapee is identified as Charlie Maurice Williams. He is in his mid-20's and is from southern Clarke County. Sheriff Todd Kemp said Williams was in jail on drug charges awaiting a court appearance.

"We believe Mr. Williams is still in the area," said Kemp. "At this point he's just making things worse and harder on himself."

Kemp said Williams, a trusty, escaped from the kitchen area around 5 p.m. Sunday. Kemp said he was cleaning the kitchen when a jailer noticed that the man had a cell phone and confronted him. The sheriff said a scuffle occurred between the two before Williams fled on foot.

"A manhunt ensued. We stayed out until the wee hours of the morning trying to get him apprehended," said Kemp. "He somehow fled the woods, and we believe someone picked him up."

Anyone with information on Williams' location is asked to call the Clarke County Sheriff's Department at 601-776-5252.

"You try to entrust one to help work around here and help do some things that make him a better citizen, and then they go and do something stupid like this," said Kemp.

To respond to the negative comments ,yes god is in control of everything ,and i beleive in the law and the the local law enforcment does not make the laws, that comes from the state capital, and i looked up the law, and it is aganst the law to have a cell phone in a correctional facility or county jail, the max sentence a person could receiveis 5 years, and as for as the doors being open the man was a trusty he could have left at any time he was already out of the cell wake up people !

I think Mr. Kemp is doing a great job, If he wasn't why would the citizens in Clarke Co. have him there? Some people get locked up for petty things and some for serious crimes, BUT !!! it's the STUPID criminals that do things to make it worse on themselves. This young man probably have been in jail on these charges more than once, and when he was in the bathroom on the cell phone, he was planning his get-away.........I bet when they find him he will still be in the area, closer to the police than they realize (He's under your nose Mr. Kemp) Just sit back and look!!! I would like to thank the Clarke Co. officers for protecting me and my family when we were in the area, so to the ones will negative talk............Get a life...........Stop committing CRIMES!!!!

Well..How about getting some help people on spelling..This man broke the law and will pay.I feel if you do break the law and go to jail you should not be treated like a dog because a dog deserves better than a person in jail...

God Is In Control. Everyone should be praying and asking God to Handle their every situation.Yes,I agree, visitation is over at 2:00p.m. so why was the door still left opened. I have never been in jail but from what i have seen and heard from people who have been incarcentrated, animals on the street are treated better than these inmates at the Clarke County jail. You treat a dog wrong for so long, the dog will bite.

Sounds like most of you that are commenting know everything about nothing,It seems that clarke county law enforcement is always wrong about everthing they do, and that leads me to believe that most of these poeple commenting have been in the clarke county jail and have a riff with them, well im a clarke county citizen and i think they do a fine job sheriff kemp caught 4 people that broke into my house and recovered most of my property, people should not be quick to judge him if you dont know him he does care about the people of clarke county.

I wish for one time people would have something GOOD to say about law enforcement . Everytime something happens there is always negative talk about either the Sheriff's Dept.,Police Dept,or Highway Patrol very seldom do u ever hear anything postive about law enforcement. Do u ever think about the times they go out at night while your asleep and catch calls and work wrecks ? No all u think about is the bad probably because u have been on the bad side of the law. I thank god everyday for our law enforement in this county .
