The Clarke County Sheriff's Department is on the look-out for an escapee from the Clarke County Jail.
The escapee is identified as Charlie Maurice Williams. He is in his mid-20's and is from southern Clarke County. Sheriff Todd Kemp said Williams was in jail on drug charges awaiting a court appearance.
"We believe Mr. Williams is still in the area," said Kemp. "At this point he's just making things worse and harder on himself."
Kemp said Williams, a trusty, escaped from the kitchen area around 5 p.m. Sunday. Kemp said he was cleaning the kitchen when a jailer noticed that the man had a cell phone and confronted him. The sheriff said a scuffle occurred between the two before Williams fled on foot.
"A manhunt ensued. We stayed out until the wee hours of the morning trying to get him apprehended," said Kemp. "He somehow fled the woods, and we believe someone picked him up."
Anyone with information on Williams' location is asked to call the Clarke County Sheriff's Department at 601-776-5252.
"You try to entrust one to help work around here and help do some things that make him a better citizen, and then they go and do something stupid like this," said Kemp.
