Northeast Middle School Teacher Arrested

The Pensacola Police Department says it arrested a middle school teacher from Meridian Thursday after he drove to Pensacola thinking he was going to have sex with a 15-year-old female.

Instead, officials say Clifford Holloway, 56, of 7759 Lizelia Road had set up a meeting with an undercover police officer who had been communicating with him since mid-June on MySpace.

Lauderdale County school superintendent Randy Hodges said Friday Holloway has been suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the case. He said the district is cooperating fully with local law enforcement. Holloway's computer at Northeast Middle School was seized Friday.

Holloway has been charged with two counts of sexual assault on a child 16 years old or older, two counts of transmitting pornography to a minor and one count of traveling to have sex with a minor. Additional charges are pending.

The suspect is a science and physical education teacher at Northeast Middle School in Meridian, Miss. He has been a teacher in the Lauderdale, Miss., County School District for 28 years.

Holloway was arrested around 3:30 p.m. Thursday after a member of the Northwest Florida Child Pornography Task Force saw him driving in the area of Palafox and Cervantes streets. Pensacola Police Officer Chris Wilkinson said Holloway drove to Pensacola Thursday and arrived here around noon planning to meet a 15-year-old female at a local motel around 2:20 p.m. and have sex with her.

Detective Tarlanda Gooden began investigating Holloway after Capt. Paul Kelly received a telephone call on June 15 from a concerned Pensacola mother who said her 16-year-old daughter had been communicating with a 56-year-old man via MySpace on the computer. The mother learned of their communications after checking her daughter’s MySpace page. The victim told Gooden she had had sex twice with Holloway in March at a Pensacola motel.

Wilkinson began communicating with Holloway via MySpace on June 27 as part of an undercover investigation where he pretended to be a 15-year-old female. Wilkinson said he and Holloway communicated with each other almost daily on the computer, and that a few weeks after they began talking, the suspect asked about them meeting in Pensacola.

In both investigations, Holloway transmitted nude photographs of himself over the computer to the 16-year-old victim and to Wilkinson. He also asked both victims for nude photographs of themselves; Gooden said the 16-year-old victim complied.

As part of the on-going investigation, Wilkinson will do a forensic analysis of Holloway’s computer and cell phone to determine if he has been in contact with other minors.

Officers with the Pensacola Police Department, Escambia and Santa Rosa sheriff’s offices, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and State Attorney General’s CyberCrimes Unit participated in Thursday’s arrest.

Wilkinson said Holloway used the screen names MySpace.com/Golfcoach18 and Golfcoach18@Yahoo.com.

Any minors who may have been in contact with Holloway or knows someone who has had contact with Holloway is asked to contact Detective Tarlanda Gooden at 850-435-1972.

If you have or did have children, would you monitor their Internet use?

I was one of Coach Holloway's students and we all knew then he was a pervert. He's always been attracted to kids. It's just crazy how 15 years later, they finally busted him!

Administrators cannot look over the shoulder of teachers all day, it is not unlike any place of businees, creeps will do stupid stuff. Rosemary Harris and Billy Burnham make up the best administrative team in the state. your children are well looked out for here.

I have known Scooter for many years, and it was obvious to me that he was a sexual deviant. BUT I thought that only included running around on his wife and having affairs with women. Any woman who has been around him for more than 2 minutes should be able to tell he is a total pervert. Teachers have an extremely difficult job and deserve our help and respect, UNLESS they are crappy perverts like him. School systems should have a way to get rid of crappy coaches who stand in the halls and talk instead of teaching classes...but their hands are tied. Like most government run systems, there is too much red tape to do anything with people like this. They practically have to kill somebody to get fired, and if you remember what happened a few years back THAT doesn't even guarantee they will be fired. Government cannot run anything correctly. I hope you all are praying for our country and letting our gov't. representatives know that we DO NOT want them in charge of our health care, too!

Whoever defends or forgives this man's actions is as guilty as he! Compassion for the victim and family is needed but he knew what he was doing and proceeded anyway. Its obvious he has the ability to manipulate people and I hope he doesn't have that chance again outside of prison. I hope he enjoys the pain he has caused to his family, co-workers and community.

Many superintendents and principals have dealt with this teacher throughout the years, not just the current ones holding the positions. The attitude of former NEMS admin. seemed to be he that was a "harmless" creep. But he did, just like predators of this type do, know when to behave and put on a front of being "normal." But anyone who has been on the receiving end of his "harmless" inappropriate comments/behaviors as a student or co-worker knows differently. Maybe if his perverse behavior had been documented and handled appropriately in the LCSD,this teen in FL wouldn't have been victimized. I guess the thought was "can we fire him for being a creep? Can we fire him for looking at females in a certain way? Can we prove it? How do we prove it?" I'm not saying that it was right! It is harder to fire a sick &sneaky tenured teacher than people realize. I just hate to think of how unsafe his female students must have felt through the years. I'm praying for everyone affected by this sick man.

Isn't it interesting that everything going wrong in MPSD is the Superintendent's and the Board's fault but many have spoken out and reported that they have complained about this teacher and yet, it seems as if LCSD is trying to get a pass. Where was the superintendent? Where were the other teachers, board members, custodians, bookkeepers?????? If you are going to hold MPSD to such an unreachable standard, should not the same be true for LCSD? I think that fair is fair....MPSD and LCSD have issues but only one is majority minority and for some reason that seems to make all the difference in the world.

IF WE AS PARENTS DO NOT PROTECT OUR CHILDREN, WHO WILL? I HAVE TWO BOYS AND TWO GIRLS AND IF I KNEW OF SOMEONE PURSUING ANY OF THEM, I WOULD LOSE MY MIND. I WOULD SPEND EVERY MOMENT GOD GAVE ME BREATH, MAKING SURE THE PERSON DOING HARM WAS SORRY HE/SHE EVER MADE A DECISION TO MISTREAT MY BABIES. I HOPE THIS SITUATION IS NOT PUSHED UNDER THE RUG AND FORGOTTEN. IT NEEDS LOTS OF ATTENTION AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED NATIONWIDE. THIS IS GOING ON ALL OVER THE WORLD AND NO ONE IS DOING A THING ABOUT IT, JUST HOPING THAT THE INNOCENT WILL RECOVER AND MOVE ON, BUT IN REALITY THEY NEVER MOVE ON, NOR DO THEY COPE WITH IT. IT IS A SCAR FOR LIFE AND BECAUSE OF AN IGNORANT ACT OF SOMEONE WHO IS SUPPOSE TO BE THE TRUSTED ONE, BECOMES THE PERSON THEY FEAR. WAKE UP. GOD BLESS AND MAY GOD GIVE US WISDOM AS PARENTS.

I HAVE READ EACH COMMENT, SOME OF YOU GET IT AND THE REST, WELL IT IS JUST A SHAME THAT EXCUSES CAN BE MADE FOR SUCH ACTS. THERE IS ALWAYS JUSTIFICATION, BLAMING SOMEONE OR SOMETHING ELSE FOR THE ACT OF ONE PERSON. NO MATTER HOW IT HAPPENED, IT HAPPENED. THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR HAS GONE ON FOR YEARS, A LONG TIME BEFORE CELL PHONES AND COMPUTERS (INTERNET). AND FOR THOSE WHO SAY JUST BE THANKFUL NO ONE WAS HURT, I AM ALMOST POSITIVE A 15 YR OLD GIRL AND HER FAMILY WILL BE SCARRED FOR LIFE, AND THERE IS NO TELLING HOW MANY OTHERS, WE MAY NEVER KNOW, BUT THEY WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES AND NO JUSTIFICATION. NOBODY IS TO BLAME, BUT THE PERSON WHO ENGAGES IN THESE SICK, TWISTED ACTS AND THOSE WHO DO NOT HEAR THE ONES CRYING OUT. MEN AND WOMEN OF THIS CALIBER, SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED THE PRIVILEGE TO WORK WITH OR HAVE CONTACT WITH THE INNOCENT.

This is a very disturbing case. I am a 37 year old mother of four, who has been a resident of the area since I was a small child. I also attended Northeast High School and have siblings who have attended from elementary to high school. This situation was handled very carelessly. It was no secret among the students who had this predator as a teacher, nor the students who did not (THANK GOD). I know that it was brought to the attention of faculty, but ignored. So why would students, minors, children speak out when they know this person will remain free to continue his devastating acts. This man remained in our school system for 28, might as well say 30 yrs. It is haunting to think of all the damage he has done in that many years. WE WANT OUR CHILDREN TO SPEAK UP, BUT WHEN THEY DO, SOMEONE TELLS THEM TO BE QUIET. This should be top priorty in every school to make sure these people do not have access to our children, no matter what the cost.

The school system isn't to blame for Holloway's actions anymore than Christianity is to blame for Ted Haggard's actions. There are bad apples in every bunch.
