Former Mayor Named CEO of Non-Profit

Former Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith has a new job, heading up a non-profit dedicated to better transportation.

Smith has been named the new president and CEO of Reconnecting America, non-profit that works to improve transportation in the country. He has been on the organization's board of directors for five years.

Transportation is a long-time passion for Smith, and he says he's excited about the new job.

"Of course, it's a tremendous challenge. It's a new work for me, but in many ways it's what I have been about for some time now," said Smith. "A great opportunity for me and my family, but it's still an opportunity for Meridian and Mississippi to have these voices at the nation's capital."

Smith left office at the end of last month, after not seeking re-election. He was Meridian's mayor for 16 years. Smith will move to Washington, D.C., where he will lead offices there and in San Francisco.

JRS did a great job as Mayor. He brought alot to this area that we needed. He may not the most personable guy in town, but I think he will be known as one of the best Mayors we've had. Good luck to JRS!

The last two mayors moved away, why not you, too?

Comments like some of the ones below really make me want to move away again. You people are so closed minded and judgmental, it's not even funny. It's no wonder this area is experiencing a population decline.

Washington and San Franciso, perfect combination. Former mayor Smith, sounds good doesn't it?

For anyone who doesn't think John Robert was a good mayor or doesn't like him personally, you're entitled to your opinion. But making snide comments especially after he chose not to run and is not the mayor of your town anymore says more about you than it says about him.
