Former Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith has a new job, heading up a non-profit dedicated to better transportation.
Smith has been named the new president and CEO of Reconnecting America, non-profit that works to improve transportation in the country. He has been on the organization's board of directors for five years.
Transportation is a long-time passion for Smith, and he says he's excited about the new job.
"Of course, it's a tremendous challenge. It's a new work for me, but in many ways it's what I have been about for some time now," said Smith. "A great opportunity for me and my family, but it's still an opportunity for Meridian and Mississippi to have these voices at the nation's capital."
Smith left office at the end of last month, after not seeking re-election. He was Meridian's mayor for 16 years. Smith will move to Washington, D.C., where he will lead offices there and in San Francisco.
