Funding Announced for Veterans Cemetery

The Mississippi Veterans Cemetery in Newton County is getting about $7 million from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Cong. Gregg Harper announced the funding Tuesday.

The grant will reimburse the state for 100 percent of the costs associated with the first phase of the cemetery's development.

The cemetery being built near Hickory will be the first of its kind in Mississippi.

The cemetery is set to open in 2011, and inter as many as 5,000 deceased veterans.

I'm thrilled that this cemetary is going to be a reality.Lots of folks in this area would like to go to a veterans cemetary if one was close. The cemetary at Keesler says that they will be full in a couple of years with no room to expand. Great work on the part of everyone who worked for this.
