Barry Reviewing Recent Appointments, Promotions

New Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry says she's reviewing some of John Robert Smith's appointments in his closing days in office, and might be making some changes.

That involves police department positions, including Assistant Chief Jeff Lewis and commander of operations, Capt. Dean Harper.

Barry says she hasn't made a decision yet, but she says it has everything to do with when they were promoted.

If the promotions are rescinded, the men will have the option to return to their former positions without testing. But if they want to reapply for their current positions, they would have to take the civil service test again.

"These gentleman and board appointments may be the very best for the job, but we are going to look at that," Barry said.

Along with these positions, Barry says she is also in the process of reviewing department heads. However, there is no time-line as for when we could hear news about potential leadership changes.

NOTHING LIKE CORRUPT POLITICS. LET ME GUESS, JOBS WERE PROMISED TO THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE MAYOR'S CAMPAIGN AND NOW SHE'S MAKING GOOD ON IT. BIG MISTAKE. YOU'VE GOT THE BEST PEOPLE AT MPD FOR CAPTAIN AND ASST. CHIEF. THEY "EARNED" THEIR PROMOTIONS THROUGH YEARS OF HARD WORK, LONG HOURS AND DEDICATED SERVICE. HOW SAD THAT ALL IT TAKES IS A LITTLE CASH UNDER THE TABLE AND A JOB IS PROVIDED FOR YOU AT SOMEONE ELSE'S EXPENSE. HOW DO THOSE THAT HURT OTHERS SLEEP AT NIGHT? SHAME ON YOU MAYOR BARRY, YOU AND YOUR DIRTY DEN OF THIEVES.

I support Mayor Barry, because she wants to change Meridian; the "good ole' boy" system does need to be eliminated. I don't really know Harper, but I've known Jeff Lewis for years, and I know he's a good person and a dedicated policeman. I'm just anxious to see what changes she makes in the Public Works Complex and the Water Dept. There are a couple of people in there that need to be out on their ears!

The new mayor is making a bad mistake by rescinding these two appointments.

If you really knew Mayor Barry you would know that she is a hardworking, decent and honest person. I am sure she has Meridian's best interest at heart. Go back and look at her record with the Key Chapter, American Red Cross. Give her a chance.

She is the mayor. She has the right to do this. I think that chief of police needs to go soon. Look at the problems over the years. Dubose needs to go.
