Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker says health care proposals in Washington are "the mother of unfunded mandates."
Wicker told the Pascagoula Kiwanis Club Tuesday that a government-run health program could bankrupt 35 to 40 states, including Mississippi.
The freshman senator said there should be more competition in the private health-insurance market, and people should be allowed to cross state lines to purchase policies.
The U.S. House and Senate are in their August recess, but committees are considering health proposals.
Wicker said he believes "there's a better than even chance" that the plans will get derailed when the full Congress returns to work.
