Donors Show Up to Help Community

The potential for rain put a damper on the 'Scrub For Blood' blood drive at United Blood Services in Meridian Friday. But many people still showed up to donate. What was supposed to happen is, in exchange for a donation of blood or platelets, you could get a free car wash at the center.

"The weather is probably not going to cooperate with us, so we decided in lieu of actually washing cars here today, we're going to give the vouchers away so they can do it at their leisure," said Heather Knight, marketing director.

Since rain was in our forecast, United Blood Services decided to hold off on the car wash. Instead, they gave vouchers to those who donated to get a free car wash at Rocket Tunnel Car Wash on Highway 19 near Wal-Mart.

Nearly all types of blood and platelets are needed.

"O negative donors are very important as always. We're never fully supplied on O negative," said Knight. "And as everyone probably knows, O negative blood cells are the universal donors. We're also looking for AB plasma donors."

The donations help people all over Mississippi who are in need of blood.

"Various people need blood for various things, whether it's a trauma patient, a cancer patient, maybe someone going through a plasma exchange. It's different things for different people," Knight said.

If you missed out on a free car wash, you can still donate this month and get registered for a drawing to win a cruise. Where do you get to go? Wherever you want!
