A Newton County native was killed Thursday during a mortar attack in Afghanistan, according to his family.

This was Matthew Ingram's third tour in the U.S. Army. He had been to Iraq twice and left May 28 for a third trip, this time to Afghanistan.

Ingram leaves behind his wife, Holly, and their 10-month-old daughter, who live in Colorado where Ingram was stationed at Fort Collins.

Ingram grew up in east Mississippi and attended Newton County High School.

Ingram is the tenth soldier from this area to die in service since 9/11.

According to family members, services have not yet been set.

I went to NCHS with Mathew. He was a good man. I served in the Air Force, and I am very sad, but proud. His family should know that he and his family all are in my prayers. Matt- I know you paid the ultimate price for what you believed in, and I know your family is proud. May god always be there for your family and friends, and may he always be with the U.S. Troops over in Afghanistan. GOD BLESS YOU MATHEW INGRAM. YOU WILL BE MISSED TREMENDOUSLY!!!

Oh, Mathew!!!! My heart breaks for your family!!!! You have paid the ultimate price for the freedom of all of us back home....and they can say what they want to, if we don't fight them there we will have to fight them here. I beg for God's absolute peace upon your family; that they will know and understand that this separation is not forever and they will see you again. Leaning on our Heavenly Father will bring us through all the hard times and provide a peace that cannot be described in human words. Dear Mathew, blessed boy!!!!! I pray that God will be extra close to your family in the coming days and hold them all in the palm of His great hand forever. With much love, I will never forget you and always be greatful to you. See you later, Matt!!!!

I am so sorry for the loss this family is suffering. I pray they will know God's presence in a special way during this very difficult time. To the Ingrams, please know that your community cares about you and appreciates Matthew's willingness to serve his country. Words are insufficient to express how special Matthew was.
