Mississippi health officials say a 6-year-old child has died of bacterial meningitis.
State Department of Health officials said Tuesday that the child, who attended Dana Road Elementary School, died Sunday at a Jackson hospital.
Meningitis can be deadly, but it is less contagious than the flu or common cold and is not spread by casual contact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vicksburg-Warren School District superintendent James Price said officials are trying to determine who had contact with the child and should be seen by health officials.
Officials at River Region Medical Center, where the child was first taken, also are checking to see who had contact with her.
