The WIN Job Center in Meridian had a packed parking lot Tuesday as officials with the NEW Call Center held a job fair there. Three informational sessions were scheduled throughout the day. But because of the big turnout organizers had to add several additional sessions.
"We're coming up on our very busy season and so we definitely want to find people who are excited about a new career and coming on board with us," said Kathy Null, NEW Corporation recruiter.
Between now and November, NEW, which serves as a call service center for DirecTV, is looking to hire about one hundred new workers.
Company officials say having good computer skills is a requirement for the jobs. That's why they are advising individuals interested in getting a job there to develop some good skills by taking advantage of free classes that are offered at the WIN Job Center, not only for people who are beginners but for people who are more advanced.
"Most companies ask you for different types of computer skills and you already have to know those skills going in to those companies," said Margarette Cole, computer class instructor at WIN Job Center.
Sharon Baylor is taking the computer class. She said she has been looking for a job, and everywhere she goes, she has been told certain computer skills are required.
"She's teaching us filing and I was messing up. My boss got on me a lot about filing," said Ruby Hannah, who says her skills have already improved.
With a six-week paid training period, the starting salary for workers at NEW's call center is $9.25 an hour.
