The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians was included in the will of Mary Katharine Loyacono McCravey, of Forest, to receive an original oil painting by P. Sanders McNeal.
McCravey bequeathed to the Choctaw Tribe an original work of art from her collection, a 20” x 16” original oil painting on canvas, was painted by Jackson, Mississippi, artist P. Sanders McNeal. It's titled “Legacy in Neshoba County”.
The painting features a seated Choctaw woman, dressed in bright yellow, making a cane basket in the age-old tradition for which the tribe is famous.
The tribe expressed its appreciation to the McCravey Estate and to Barbara Gatewood of the Gatewood Gallery in Forest for her assistance and cooperation related to the bequest.
The MBCI says Mary Katharine McCravey, who died at her home earlier this year at the age of 99, was a friend of the Choctaw, a very close friend of the artist Sandy McNeal, and was also an artist herself.
