The Mississippi Department of Transportation plans to begin the reconstruction of a busy Highway 39 intersection in Lauderdale County Tuesday.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Sept. 8, reconstruction of the intersection of Highway 39, Front Street, and 17th Street in Meridian will get underway.
The location is where Bowers Auto, Bonita Auto Sales, and Mississippi Auto Glass are. Officials say it will be a major inconvenience to drivers.
MDOT says the project will include milling out six inches of asphalt pavement, and replacing this pavement with six inches of concrete throughout the entire intersection.
With work on some construction days ongoing around the clock, major traffic-flow disruptions are expected.
The work will require lane restrictions, and traffic will be required to shift lanes. Delays will occur, and motorists should seek alternate routes if possible. The project is expected to take two weeks to complete.
Officials say the reconstruction will provide a long-life pavement that will withstand slow-moving, and/or stop-and-go truck traffic on a surface that is resistant to rutting, resulting in a greater degree of safety for motorists.
