Police Chief Resigning

Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose said late Thursday afternoon that he plans to resign from the post he has held for almost 8 years. Dubose says he is resigning at the request of Mayor Cheri Barry, who took office in July.

Dubose told Newscenter 11, "I was disappointed, but I understand she is the appointing authority and it is her right to decide who is best and I wasn't the choice."

Newscenter 11 was not able to immediately reach members of the Barry administration to ask questions about the decision.

We'll have more on this story as it develops.

Posted by: Been in Those Shoes Location: Meridian on Sep 11, 2009 at 06:53 PM Anyone who has been in Meridian for any length of time knows that black police officers have just recently gotten authority to arrest whites. Are you CRAZY, or is your idea of RECENT the last 40 years? BTW, The MAYOR does not influence what goes on in the District Attorney's Office. He is an elected official that YOU elected to serve You. Want changes, Pay attention next time there is an election. The Current mayoral system we have places the most power with the Mayor. Does it matter WHO is Chief when the Mayor's office calls all the shots? It was a good run Dubose, you will be missed.

Dubose didn't do his job. He allowed his officers reck mayhem and havoc on this town. And now with someone new coming in maybe something good will happen. Mayor Barry is doing what should have been done years ago and that is clean up and out. As far as Lewis and Harper being demoted, thats a good thing should have never been promoted. Should have seen the way Lewis acted with trying to fight with peewee coaches at a little league game in Quitman, MS. And to think someone like that is in charge of the MPD officers patrolling the streets, now thats a joke. Way to go Mayor Barry gettin all. Then get the DA'S office. Scandalous bunch.

every one comparing the job lost of the 2 white officers to Chief Dubose just a inside scoop they were demoted because Dino Harper cheated on the test by passing out the answers to the ones that recieved the promotions thats why the mayor made the statement if they wanted the positions they could be retested. What ever happen to the officer who assisted his wife in a robbery by making it to the scene first and covering up evidence.what about the city judge who sets his own rules he needs to go to.

everyone wants to cry poor police chief where was the chief when numerous complaints was filed against meridian finest police officer there is so much abuse by these untrained rejects from another department what happen to back ground checks insided corruptions has officers that takes drugs from the drug dealers and put them back on the street. ,these police officers have made their own laws,it seemed to be a different standard for the blacks than the whites and Chief Dubose being the black man that he is has failed the people black an white. i dont see why he's making a big argrument he knew when the position became available he could only serve during the term of the mayor elected. So how can you expect the people to stand behind you when you done nothing for the people tell the black people how you was just a black face in the position with your hands tied and John Roberts, Ken Storms and other public officials pulled your strings.

I guess you can say that Chief Dubose allowed everyone to do their own thing. Like allowed the Roberts to work both jobs at the police dept. & constable at the same time on city time using city vehicle.

I don't think that right to make some to resiging from there job if they haven't did anything wrong.Chief Benny Dubose shouldn't have to give his job up.now if she is going to that she should let the City of Meridian Ms vote him out.

Your newly elected mayor is following through on some campaign promises-quip pro quo. First, Bill Marcy was asked to drop out of the race so Cheri could run unopposed(Bunky's replacement dropped out as well) Cheri made a lot of promises to get elected mayor. Many of these appointments, regrettably, have nothing to do with whether the persons carried out their job responsibilities or not. Some of these appointments are about getting rid of people she perceived as Bland supporters. I agree with other bloggers; Cheri will be a one term mayor. Anyone who knows anything about administration will tell you that you don't begin by replacing most of your department heads. You first analyze and see what works and what does not work. I think the citizens of Meridian better buckle up, because the city is in for a tumultuous ride. It is obvious that Cheri doesn't have a clue about running a city; the strings are being pulled by Rick Barry and Bill Ready. Those people who voted for Cheri will woo the
