Swayze Had Ties to East Mississippi

Actor Patrick Swayze was known for his blockbuster movies like Dirty Dancing and Ghost. What many of you might not have known is that he had ties to east Mississippi.

Betty Gail Skinner of Hidden Springs Arabians Farm in Newton, Miss., has a replica of Swayze's horse, Tammen.

Skinner first met Swayze in the 1980s in his home state of Texas. Now all of the horses on the farms, which she co-owns, are offspring of his prized horse, Tammen.

"That was his stallion that he loved dearly," said Skinner. "We were all in this together. Had horses in Houston where Patrick was from. That's where we all became friends and showed together."

Skinner called Swayze by his nickname, Buddy.

"He was a good guy and Buddy was the way you saw him in the movies; that was him," Skinner said. "He always said he had a Texas mentality and he didn't put on any air or anything like that. He was just Buddy."

Despite his untimely death, Skinner says Swayze's legacy will continue to live.

"Just having his breeding program here with the stallions. They've all been champions and that speaks for itself," Skinner said.

Swayze was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1980s and 1990s. He made more than thirty films in all, in addition to appearances on numerous TV shows. In 1991, he was named People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive." In 2008, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which eventually took his life.

Swayze would eat at News Restaurant in Meridian when he visited Newton. There was an autographed picture of him hanging by the front door for several years.
