The Meridian Housing Authority is celebrating a first. It's one of only three public housing agencies in the nation to be awarded more than $725,000 for resident scholarships.
It's part of the $17 million HOPE VI grant that the housing authority received several years ago from HUD.
The agency presented the funds Thursday to the Community Foundation of East Mississippi, which will oversee the endowment.
"In the 25-year history of the foundation, this represents the largest single gift we've ever received," said Ronnie Walton, president of the Community Foundation of East Mississippi.
"We anticipate that we could possibly support up to 12 public housing residents with full college scholarships to the college of their choice," said Ronald Turner, executive director of the Meridian Housing Authority.
So far, the Meridian Housing Authority is the only public housing agency in Mississippi to be awarded the funding.
