Cosgrove: Shelton Not Catholic Priest

A man arrested in Lauderdale County for computer luring of a minor allegedly made false claims that he is a Catholic priest. 40-year-old Christopher Shelton was arrested Thursday.

Father Frank Cosgrove of Meridian's Catholic community said the claim especially concerned him.

Cosgrove wanted to stress that Shelton has no connection at all with St. Patrick or St. Joseph Catholic churches.

"We need to pray for the victim and the perpetrator in a case like this. It's a terrible tragedy when something like this happens," said Cosgrove. "After that, I want to say that the alleged perpetrator, Mr. Shelton, is not a Catholic clergyman and never has been. In fact, he's not even a Catholic."

Father Cosgrove also said Shelton has not performed funerals at either of Meridian's Catholic churches.

This guy has creeped people out for years. As far as the bond its typical of sex offenders to get low bonds. And when it does hit the DA it will probably not even make it past the grand jury. The DA's office has a habit of allowing sex offenders back out on the street. Don't believe me,check court records. No one in this town wants to acknowledge the fact that this type of activity has been going on for years. Kids are abused and molested everyday in this town and no one does anything about it. And when they do, it doesn't even get past the grand jury. People check the court records. And start listening to whats going on around you. The LCSD and MPD investegators and detectives work endless to put this type of people away, only for Bilbo and his crew to release them. Yeah the DA's office needs to be clean up and out.

Our Justice Court Judges have a long history of being blind to reality, including this example. It's amazing how we elect people to positions who don't give a hoot about anyone but themselves, but we do it each and every election.

I believe I heard he is already out on bond. $2500 to get out of jail after what he is accused of doing is a JOKE!!!

I just read the paper and I'm outraged that the young man who's parents brought this to light has been picked on by his shoolmates. I'm sorry that he was attacted that way.Why was his named released to the public? This man is the only one who should be attacked.

This guy has a history of being a complete whackadoo and should have been institutionalized years ago for his safety and the safety of others.

At this point in the case, a justice court judge would have set bond. The DA is not involved in that, so your anger or dissatisfaction about the low bond is misplaced.

When you hear about things like this, often people in the community, neighbors or friends will say, "I can't believe he/she did this..they seem so normal"...well, there is nothing normal about this guy. I've known of him for years....walking around dressed like a preist, or like a zoo-keeper, and visiting area churches, just giving you the creeps. This is the type person that needs to be put away....before he does irreversible damage. Thank you LCSD...and shame on you DA......we will remember this at election time.

How can they let him bail out on such a low bond. He's not going to stop, he'll just find another way to satisfy his urges.
