Mississippi's unemployment rate dropped to 9.5 percent in August, down a percentage point from July.
The Mississippi Department of Employment Security says the rate was still above the 7.4 percent jobless rate in August 2008.
The national unemployment rate was 9.6 percent.
Rankin and Madison counties had the lowest August jobless rates at 5.9 percent and 6.7 percent. Jefferson County had the highest at 18.6 percent.
