Twin States Rank Low in Math

Alabama and Mississippi rank near the bottom of the country in eighth grade mathematics.

A report released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Education shows that public school students in both states rank 49th and 50th, respectively. Only the District of Columbia had worse scores in the subject.

Alabama Superintendent Joe Morton said "we're not where we want to be, we're not where we are going to be, but we're not where we used to be."

The test, called "The Nation's Report Card," is meant to measure how states are doing academically compared to the rest of the country in subjects like math, reading, science, history and geography.

My earlier post should have read property taxes and utility costs. Typographical errors-sorry!

Mike, I agree with you 100%. Cuts in education should infuriate every tax paying citizen in Mississippi, especially when property, car tags, garbage fees, and utilitie costs continue to increase. No wonder Mississippi is at the bottom of the educational totem pole. The only thing we have to boast about is obesity. Shame, shame, shame!

Is it any wonder why we are the lowest in everything? The State of Mississippi cut education to fund something else. This means that my Kindergardener, after 8 weeks of school, has to dis-band her class and join another class. I spoke with a teacher of 21 years and she said she has never ever seen this happen. Where is our tax dollars going? I want my tax dollars back.
