Students Exercise Right to Vote

Some local students got a chance to learn a little lesson in civics Friday, and learn about how adults vote.

Carver Middle School in Meridian held student body elections, using the county's relatively new electronic voting machines.

Lauderdale County Dist. 4 supervisor Joe Norwood and members of the Lauderdale County Election Commission were on hand to help. They say it's important to get young people excited about being able to vote one day.

"Some kids get an opportunity to go to the polls with their parents and understand at a young age about the voting process," said Norwood. "But we want to encourage them to get the bug, get the fever, make sure that whenever they become of age, that they will not let anything come between them and the poll on election day. "

School officials say it was exciting for the kids to be able to use the same machines the adults use.
