The public gathered to discuss the possible closure of Valley Road. The closure would be just north of Valley Road's intersection with 31st Avenue in Lauderdale County.

Representatives from the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation said the closure would be to improve public safety and provide a better opportunity for expansion at Atlas Roofing. The forum Tuesday night was the first of two scheduled to get public comment.

"The purpose of tonight is to get your input. I guess I see this as two issues: convenience and then safety. We need to weigh all of those issues to weigh what's best for this community and that's why the board of supervisors of Lauderdale County and the city of Meridian asked us to help coordinate this meeting," said Wade Jones, EMBDC president.

"The reason again for this request is for the safety of our citizens and the safety of our employees. In the future the needs and expenses may arise and in order for us to be able to do this we need to put this thing in place to make it safe through traffic." said Roger Myrick, manager of Atlas Roofing.

Many of the citizens in attendance expressed the idea of considering different alternatives.

The second forum is set for Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Union Station.

I was raised on Valley road, and my parents still live out there. You need to think about this what if there was a fire or wreck at Atlas Roofing or at Pilot and South Lauderdale Fire Department was needed for back up,even though these 2 places are in the city limits!!! If the road is closed it could mean life, or death to someone if they had to go up 31st Aveune, Interstate, and then back to Valley road an d49th ave to be of any help. My Parents do alot of business at Pilot, as well as other redince of Valley Road do and it would make it harder on them to have to go around to get there. I am 35 years old and all my life you have been able to get up and down that road going through there. To me the problem is not with the local drivers that live on Valley Road it is with the drivers of the Big Trucks. On many of occisions I have almost been hit going through there, not because I was driving to fast, but due to the truck drivers not paying attention. Really stop an think if this is wise
