Meridian police responded to the scene of an apparent homicide Friday around 11 a.m. A body was found in a vehicle in the 2300 block of 25th Avenue.
The victim was identified as 29-year-old Jerome Hearn of Meridian.
"We were initially called to the scene in reference to shots fired in the area," said Capt. James Sharpe, chief of criminal investigations for the Meridian Police Department. "Once the patrol officers got there, they had several complaints, they were canvassing the area when they came upon a parked car at that vacant residence."
Inside the car, they found one black male victim dead, who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds.
"We feel that at least one other person knows what happened and we think there might be possible witnesses, even people who didn't realize what they were seeing when they passed by," Sharpe said.
"That person had a family, a life, and we are going to do what we can to make sure the person or people responsible are put behind bars," said Sharpe.
An autopsy by the Mississippi State Crime Lab will be scheduled to determine the official cause of Hearn's death.
