The 36th Avenue Neighborhood Watch met Monday night at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator.
Mayor Cheri Barry attended the meeting. She introduced the new Meridian police chief, Lee Shelbourn and the new fire chief, Anthony Clayton.
All three were there to answer questions posed by residents.
"My plan is to work extremely heavy on community policing. Of course, a lot of people don't understand what community policing is. All that is, is simply bridging the gap between yourself and our officers," said Shelbourn. "And we need to get out of the cars and we need to start talking to people and find out what you need, because you know what your neighborhood needs even more than the officer on the street."
Chief Shelbourn and Chief Clayton stressed that they want to work closely with the community to keep everyone safe.
