Poll Says Southerners Fear Losing Jobs

The Winthrop Poll released Wednesday found four in 10 respondents say the economy is a top concern. Nearly that many are worried about losing jobs.

Winthrop University political science professor Scott Huffmon said the worries mean people may spend less, hindering an economic recovery.

The poll of 866 people in 11 states found nearly three-quarters of people wanted new government programs to create jobs and nearly two-thirds thought states in serious financial trouble should get federal aid.

The telephone poll conducted between Oct. 24 and Nov. 7 has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.

I agree with you Antony....Think about it, if we stop hiring illegals then maybe we would not be in such a bad shape. We hire illegals, pay them less money, they pay little to no taxes, then send OUR US money to Mexico. Come on people, we need our jobs here.................

I fear we will lose more jobs here in meridian after the holidays. Like Meridian Cross Road and more business at Bonita Lake Mall will either layoff or shut down. Its really frightening to hear that a lot of people are out of work and can't find a job. To me it's just not right. Illegals can get a job faster then American citizens can.

The federal goverment is the problem. It is spelled NAFTA. I loss my job back in 2003 thanks to NAFTA. And it has been downhill for the economy since then. I am working but making 40% less than in 2003. Not until we put manufacturing back to work in this country will our economy ever recover. The American Industrial Workforce is out back bone. Now all the jobs are overseas!!!
