Salvation Army Begins Christmas Effort

The Salvation Army Thursday announced its biggest fundraiser of the year, the Red Kettle Campaign, will begin Friday.

Bell ringers will be at shopping locations all over town.

The agency uses the money donated for charitable programs at Christmas and throughout the year.

"There are so many children and families who are having a harder time this year than last year," said Maj. Steve Welch. "There are always people in need. This year there seems to be more new faces that we're seeing because of the economy. And so we want to try to make sure everyone gets a somewhat decent Christmas in the way of food and toys."

Welch says it takes everybody helping to accomplish that.

The Salvation Army asks that you "adopt" kids on the Angel Tree, and then supply clothing, shoes and toys they have listed. The deadline for turning in those gifts is Dec. 19, so the Salvation Army has time to distribute them to families.

I try to help with the Salvation Army distribution every year and I have to say that sometimes dealing with people can be trying, but it never fails that there is someone who comes for help who is so humble and thankful for every little thing and is having problems thru no fault of their own that it always reminds me of how unbelievable blessed most of us are. If you can help the Salvation Army help these families and children in any small way I encourage you to do so. It could be me or you some year in the future.
