In a Nov. 25 obituary for former Highway Patrol chief Donald Butler, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Butler was present when the bodies of three slain civil rights workers were found in 1964.
Butler witnessed the retrieval of their car from a pit in Neshoba County. The bodies of Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney were found in an earthen dam 45 days later.
Then-governor William Winter appointed Butler chief of the MHP in 1980. Butler died at the age of 73.
