A bill has been pre-filed in the Alabama Legislature that would give businesses a tax incentive to hire unemployed workers.

Republican Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa said the bill would offer an income tax credit to businesses that hire unemployed workers and keep them on the payroll for a year.

Bentley said the incentive is needed with the state's unemployment rate over 10 percent.

Bentley is a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor in 2010.
