Councilman Smith Hopeful for Threefoot

Although the Threefoot Building renovation project appears to be a dead deal, Meridian City Council president Bobby Smith says he's hopeful about the future.

Last month, the company that was set to transform the building into a luxury hotel, backed out of the deal.

HRI officials say they did this because they did not feel they had the support of Mayor Cheri Barry.

She recently expressed concerns over the costs.

With this latest development, Smith says he is open to ideas.

"I'm still for the Threefoot project," said Smith. "I'd still like to see HRI come back and do the building. But I'm going to wait and see what are the mayor's plans and whatever she decides, we'll try to go with it."

Barry says her office is now exploring options for the Threefoot Building.

Many people concerned about downtown and the Threefoot is because of the negative stance that our mayor has made.

Our mayor is anti-downtown. According to our mayor, "Everybody's been talking about downtown Meridian, but we've got so many other areas, like the interstate, that we can develop," - Meridian Star atricle January 02, 2010 Let me translate.. She wants to focus development around Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, EconoLodge, and Budget 8 Motel. Look at lalaenterprises.com Our mayor is anti-downtown. A luxury hotel located downtown would do wonders for our city, and would bring in people who would never consider staying at the EconoLodge. Look at peabodymemphis.com, or drive over to Jackson and look at The Hotel King Edward. Stand up, and speak up! Don't let government corruption stand in the way of progress and development in our city!

I am afraid that the Three foot building is about past the point of no return..If something isn't done soon it will fall in on it's self..The way I see it the city has a liability. waiting to happen..Personally I would love to see it saved...But I don't think it will happen...It will be another building in Meridian left to self destruct.
