Marion Police Chief Ben Langston was making a routine traffic stop for a seat belt violation when he suddenly found himself face to face with a wanted felon.

Billy Walker, a felon wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections shed his hat and jacket, as well as his shoes, while running from police.

Canine teams were called in to assist searching the woods along Lindley Road. Lamar School, which is located on Lindley Road, and Northeast Middle School, were both placed on lock-down as a precaution.

Lamar headmaster Shane Blanton said the school was notified by the sheriff's department that the suspect was in the area.

Walker was actually taken into custody in front of Lamar's gym after a four- hour manhunt. He was able to hide in a thick patch of woods. Walker is now being held at the Lauderdale County Jail.

Walker was on early release from charges of robbery and receiving stolen property. He had been convicted in Lauderdale County in 2006. A hearing will be held on the probation violation charge. If it stands, Walker will be heading back to prison.
