Bill Would Require Registration of ATVs

A Greenwood legislator is sponsoring legislation that would require owners of all-terrain vehicle to pay a registration fee and have information listed on a public log.

Rep. Willie J. Perkins, Sr., a Greenwood Democrat, says his constituents have complained about people on ATVs using county roads and sometimes causing disturbances. Perkins says there is no way of identifying those riders.

The bill has come critics, including Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel. Rigel says he'll uphold the law if it's passed, but he doesn't see a need for it.

I AGREE WITH ALL.WHY DON'T THE PEOPLE IN THE BIG HOUSE IN JACKSON CUT THEIR PAY INSTEAD OF GETTING IT FROM US..AND I DO HAVE MY NAME ON MY DOG'S COLLAR SO IF HE MAKES A MESS IN YOUR YARD..CALL AND I'LL GO CLEAN IT UP..IT'S HARD TO CATCH SOMEONE RIDING A ATV ON THE PUBLIC ROAD WHEN ALL THE LAW ENFORCEMENT IS AT ALL THE STORES AND STATIONS HAVING COFFEE AND SNACKS AND TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE...

I agree, and make an amendment to this bill that requires all farmers to post their name on the side of their cows so they can be identified. Un-named cows become the property of the state. And change the car tags to phone numbers so we know who to call when a teenager is driving recklessly.

This is insane. Just ticket the ones that get caught. No need to punish everyone.

Our great legislature just passed a bill that went into effect on July 1, 2009 that required a dealer that sells an ATV, Golf Cart or Motorcycle to charge an additional fee of $50 to fund a trauma care. Now they want to charge us again to register the vehicle, ridiculous. Had to be a democrat.
