Lawsuit Filed over Deadly Motel Fire

The Birmingham News reported Tuesday that the parents of two cousins who died in an Alabama motel fire have filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Jefferson County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit names an owner of the Hoover Days Inn motel where the young women died, plus a maintenance man who investigators say was burning incense in his room, apparently sparking the blaze.

The four victims had come to Birmingham to shop when fire engulfed their motel Jan. 16, trapping them inside their room.

Authorities say the motel was old and lacked a sprinkler system that could have suppressed the flames.

HOW MANY MORE DEATHS WIL THERE HAVE TO BE BEFORE MORE STRINGENT BUILDING CODES ARE PUT INTO PLACE? THE SOUTH IS STILL LIVING IN CIVIL WAR TIMES ON SO MANY ISSUES,THIS BEING ONE OF THEM. IF THERE WERE UP TO DATE LAWS REGARDING BUILDING CODES THIS DUMP MOTEL WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE A SPRINKLER SYSTEM. IM SORRY THAT THE FAMILIES OF THESE GIRLS ARE HAVING TO SUFFER THE LOSSES THEY DID JUST BEAUSE OF A LACK OF THE SOUTHERN STATES HAVING A LACK OF LAWS THAT THE REST OF THE COUNTRY HAVE HAD IN PLACE FOR MANY YEARS. THEY SHOULD SUE THE STATE OF ALABAMA FOR NEGLIGENCE.
