Talk But No Action on Lottery Proposal

A Mississippi House Committee took no action Monday on a bill that proposes creating a state lottery to help pay for college scholarships.

Only five of the 15 Gaming Committee members attended the meeting where the bill was discussed. They decided to contact their absent colleagues to seek their opinions before taking any action.

The bill will die unless it passes the Gaming Committee before a Tuesday deadline.

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour opposes creating a lottery, as do influential groups such as the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

Democratic Rep. Willie Bailey of Greenville said he wants to create a lottery and he believes legislators should not avoid discussing the issue just because the governor or others oppose it.

I agree but only if we are talking about the same kind of lottery from Shirley Jacksons short story "The Lottery".

This is one of the issues that they should put up on the ballots to vote on. I personally do not see the problem with a lottery but I have seen how a group like the Baptist association controls our representatives. It is like in counties that prohibit the sale of alcohol but you can drive a short distance into another county and buy all you want. All the revenue is being denied that county just because this group fights against it. Residents of Mississippi are being denied this revenue because of a group of people influencing OUR representatives.

I agree with MM. We already allow cosino's so why not a lottery that would provide much needed funds. If you don't believe in gambling then don't buy a ticket. It would be nice to not have to drive across the river at Vicksburg or go up to Memphis to buy a Power Ball ticket.

GO FOR IT!!! THAT REVENUE IS WELL NEEDED, NOT JUST FOR SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS, BUT MAYBE THE REPLACEMENT OF STATE SALE TAXES!!! AT THE LEAST, FUNDS TO IMPROVE OUR ROAD SYSTEMS. THE LOTTERY IS SOMETHING VERY NEEDED. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO NOW IS CROSS THE STATE LINE FOR A LOTTERY, THUS SUPPORTING SOMEONE ELSES NEEDS.
