Christians marked Ash Wednesday with special services.
Worshipers gathered at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Meridian to celebrate the first day of the Lenten season.
Lent is a forty-day period leading up to Easter Sunday Apr. 4. Sundays are not counted in the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection.
"It's a season of preparation, prayer, fasting, and study of God's Word that we start on this day. And it's a special day," said Walton Jones.
Ashes are placed on the foreheads of believers as a sign of repentance.
