A new industry that announced in 2009 it's coming to Meridian is closer to getting its distribution center up and running.
Handy Hardware will be the first occupant of the 1-20/59 Industrial Park.
Its opening date is coming soon, and it will bring over 65 jobs by November.
Handy Hardware services 13 states throughout the country. The new distribution center in Meridian is expected to do well, because of its location.
"Oh I think their future is going to be fantastic," said Wayne Lagrone, workforce project manager for Meridian Community College. "As you know, Meridian is located where the logistics, both highways and rails, are available to us like no other area close to us. And Handy Hardware is going to utilize the roads more than any other."
The company will also utilize the distribution training offered through Meridian Community College.
"We're going to aid by training the employees that they need," Lagrone said.
"We have the distribution training, the basic training that we've started."
This specific training is offered to the public for a small fee. For companies MCC works with, it's free.
John Yurcaba will be the director of warehouse operations once the distribution center does open in Meridian. He says this training is beneficial to the company and its employees. Employees come in with a basic foundation knowledge of their expected work.
"And for us, this is a big deal," said Yurcaba. "This will actually give a skill set to the people who are interested in coming to work with us, so that we are speaking a common language when they walk in the doors to start work."
