Barry Hannah Dies at 67

Acclaimed author Barry Hannah, a native of Meridian, has died. Hannah passed away Monday at his home in Oxford. He was 67.

Hannah was born in Meridian and raised in Clinton, Miss.

Hannah's first novel, Geronimo Rex, was nominated for a national book award in 1972.

His 1996 short story collection, High Lonesome, was nominated for the Pulitzer prize.

A longtime friend Tuesday called him "Mississippi's irreverent poet of the dark side".

    Hannah was already a living legend. He will be greatly missed. Meridian is fortunate to have had a hand in producing one of the world's best writers.
