The leader of the American Family Association, Donald Wildmon, has resigned as chairman. Wildmon founded the AFA in 1977.
Wildmon has been ill and hospitalized for month. According to a news release from the AFA, a bite from a mosquito carrying the St. Louis encephalitis virus caused Wildmon’s illness. He also had surgery for cancer on his left eye.
Wildmon said he would continue to work at the ministry but will not have a leadership role. The AFA owns and operates 180 radio stations.
His son, Tim Wildmon, is expected to lead the ministry.
