One of the most anticipated elements of the Newton Loose Caboose Festival is the barbecue contest. Teams put in hours to make the perfect blend of flavors.

Team Ten Bones won first in categories 'whole hog' and 'ribs'. It was Red Hot Smokers team who won first in 'shoulder' and took the title of Grand Champions!

anon. the reason you could not sample any of the bbq that were entered in the contest is because you have to have a vendors license to sail or in this case, at all competitions, give samples. some competitions do allow sampling of the winning bbq at the judges tent. as for why bother having a bbq contest? WELL WHY HAVE A SUPERBOWL? its bragging rights to know you had the best. hours upon hours have been invested in our bbq. we are very and i mean very passionate when it comes to smoking cuts of meat. competition bbq is an art form that has been turned into a science. there is no bbq resturant that can compare to competition bbq. that goes for the resturant owners that compete as well. they cant pamper every piece of meat while working as they do when competing. i hope iv been able to clarify your question.

We attended the Loose Caboose festival and was not even aware there was a BBQ contest. It was nowhere near the craft and food booths. I was later told that you could not sample nor buy any BBQ. Why bother having a BBQ contest?
